Young Sam Kim
A World in the City-01Digital Print 30 x 40" |
My name is Young Sam Kim. I am a digital photographer who is talented and experienced.
Although looking like a normal and healthy man in the mid twenties, I hear differently from others. With unknown etiology, my hearing has been profoundly impaired since 2 years of age. I hear sounds, relying on hearing aids and communicate with others via altered speech and writing when necessary.
I am so fortunate to have parents who have been supportive and positive. They supported me and encouraged me to continue taking drawing and painting lessons since I was 3 years old. When I decided to study abroad, they sent me here, United States without hesitation.
I graduated School of Visual Arts in New York City, majoring in Photography. After graduating, I worked in a few companies, photographing and editing. I have dealt with various professionals and provided timely and quality works. I often hear people saying that I have a unique sense of seeing people and objects. This may be because of the known fact that while one of the senses is deficient, the others are enhanced. However, my uniqueness is not only because of my hearing difficulty but also because of the years I have spent on training my eyes as an artistic tool. I do not say it was easy to study and work abroad as a hard of hearing individual from a different culture. However, it was rather a rewarding and self-realizing journey because I have developed strong awareness of who I am and what I am capable of doing.
I believe that my difficulty became a merit to become an artist and even to be a true professional.
