Letter from the Director - December 2011
Dear ArtLovers
December madness has arrived full force and all we are missing is snow, though perhaps as I write this, it will begin.
Viridian Artists is eagerly anticipating the incredible photographic art that will become part of our 2nd Annual Juried Photo Competition Exhibition in March. This season's competition is being juried by Jennifer Blessing, photography curator at the Guggenheim Museum. The deadline is coming up soon- January 7th- so get your images into us now.
Again this year, during our "Holiday Presence" exhibit we are featuring our
"$99 or Less Store". Our new gallery space is smaller but more charming and we have managed quite well to show a wide array of art & various objects, books, cards by artists for your last minute shopping. In fact, artists have created so many fun & fascinating objects, that we are thinking of keeping the store open year-round.
Upcoming after the Holiday show are two fascinating group shows- our New Artists show & our Affiliates show, both exhibits of 5-8 artists showing a few pieces. These are exhibits akin to mini-solo shows, for one of Viridian's important missions is to give under-known artists a chance to get their art out into the world for all to see. The New Artists show celebrates the arrival of 6 new artists into our fold: Darryl Moody, David Dorsey, Elizabeth Featherstone Hoff, Kiyoshi Kawaguchi, Valerii Klymchuk and Stacey Clarfield Newman who is returning to us after spending time in India and creating a new body of work.
One last thought to share as we enter this special time of year from Milan Kundera's "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting":
"A person who writes books [substitute "makes art"] is either all (a single universe for himself and everyone else) or nothing. And since "all" will never be given to anyone, everyone of us who [makes art] is "nothing"… everyone has trouble accepting the fact he will disappear unheard of and unnoticed in an indifferent universe, and everyone wants to make himself into a universe… before it's too late. … Once the writer [substitute "artist"] in every individual comes to life (and that time is not far off), we are in for an age of universal deafness and lack of understanding."
I hope that age has not already arrived, but I fear that perhaps it has…
Wishing you all the Happiest of Holidays!
