In Pulitzer Prize-winning Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, author Annie Dillard tells us “Ezekial excoriates false prophets as those who have ‘not gone up into the gaps.’ The gaps are the thing. The gaps are the spirit’s one home… The gaps are the cliffs in the rock where you cower to see the back parts of God; they are the fissures between mountains and cells the wind lances through……. Go up into the gaps. If you can find them; they shift and vanish too. Stalk the gaps……. This is how you spend this afternoon, and tomorrow morning, and tomorrow afternoon. Spend the afternoon. You can’t take it with you.”

Nancy Treherne Craig stalks the gaps in the natural world and in her landscape-based compositions as well. Her works are all based on actual sites, most of them in Western New York She works in acrylic paint on canvas or linen; the works are large, for Craig feels that the subject matter dictates the size of the work. Similarly, she feels the subject matter demands that the work be done (despite the distractions of a large combined family of ten children, twelve grandchildren, and in-laws). In this, her third solo show, she provides us with paintings that examine the continuing adventure of her Journey; the show invites us to join her.
