Artist Statement

I am a witness of our history. My paintings and mix media works are intended to be records of our history. They meditate on gender, war, social justice, and human existence. Realism and magical realism are tools to convey my thoughts about issues of our contemporary society. Through my work, I wish to offer a critical view to examine our social and political environments as an immigrant and a minority woman artist.

I endeavor to promote humanity, social and political justices as an artist. My body of work reflects the interest in using figurative forms and portraiture to communicate the artist’s observations of the world. My paintings and mix media works are also constantly shaped by my knowledge and experience as an educator, art historian and curator. Curatorial and art historical trainings enable me to adopt an analytical view to examine my work in terms of content, design and techniques.

I believe artists should constantly challenge themselves and explore new ways of artmaking. I experiment different techniques, styles, and subject matters for storytelling. My knowledge in art history, both the East and the West, provides with me multiple perspectives in looking at art and offer me a rich resource and a variety of techniques to incorporate into my work.

My experiences as an immigrant, a female artist, a teacher, a curator, and an art historian have been offering me invaluable resources to draw from. I wish to continue to utilize these resources to create meaningful work in my career.
