Joshua Greenberg
Artist’ Process
Joshua Greenberg creates abstract art using photo-based imagery. His process combines traditional photography with digital processing to create new abstract compositions that retain elements of the original photograph. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Viridian Artists Gallery and in national and international juried shows and museum exhibitions.
Greenberg's photo-based imagery illustrates how photography can be a diverse and expanding art form. He positions the initial photo not as the end product, but as a foundational element from which something entirely new and abstract can emerge. This shows that the evolution of digital photography is not limited to mirroring reality with greater clarity, but also to creating new dimensions of artistic expression. A camera is used for the subject, framing and light control involved in the initial photograph. The use of a computer to process the emerging composition takes place in digital workspace, which provides an additional set of potential options. It is the interaction between photograph and processing which creates the environment for new art.
Perception and the constructed reality: Greenberg's abstract compositions challenge the viewer's perception of reality. By transforming a recognizable subject, like an urban landscape or a discarded object, into a new abstract image, he prompts the audience to consider the many ways we perceive and interpret the world. His work suggests that "reality" can be dissolved and reassembled, with new layers of meaning and sensation created in the process.
Narrative in abstraction: In his series The Trees at the Edge of the Field, Take the Long Way Home and in other series, Greenberg explicitly invites viewers to create their own narratives from a sequence of abstract prints. This encourages a personal, imaginative interaction with the art, moving beyond simple observation. His series may be seen as visual narratives, which he calls visual short stories.
Finding beauty in the overlooked: For his Abstract Still Life series, Greenberg photographed discarded items under an elevated railroad track. The digital process reveals the inherent, often overlooked, beauty in these "everyday objects," transforming them into art. This series reflects on what we choose to value and discard in a consumer society.
