Artist Statement
Photo-based imagery combines elements of photography with digital processing to produce new abstract compositions. Both photograph and processing contribute to the final print. The objective is a new image with its own sense of abstraction and movement, which is based on and retains elements of the original photograph. This allows core features and strengths of photography to be combined in new ways to produce contemporary art. At the same time, experimenting with less explored dimensions of photography may also contribute to an enhanced digital art platform.
A camera is used for the subject, framing and light control involved in the initial photograph. The use of a computer to process the emerging composition takes place in digital workspace, which provides an additional set of potential options. It is the interaction between photograph and processing which creates the environment for new art. The image is no longer composed only through a viewfinder, but also in a computer. Control of elements such as, light, texture, and balance is also extended. In this way, photo-based imagery may help make the contributions of photography to contemporary art more diverse.
