Statement

This is formal work that involves both the challenges and pleasures of composing.  Each work becomes a dialogue that discusses the explorations of shifts in space, choices of color, textures, shapes, and then, choices of balance or movement. These elements, in turn, are often driven and inspired by mood, and observations experienced in nature. Whether I work with paper or wood, the process becomes an emergent interplay of thoughts and material. I don’t work from a plan; it’s an on-going process of painting, arranging, cutting, adding, subtracting, and analyzing. The wood panels bring a certain solidity and an inherent geometry of edges and corners. I often find myself contrasting these features of structural reality to a softened, muted palette, desiring something illusory, something distilled… Hopefully.

When something surprising and unexpected has emerged, I know I’m done.
