Sung-Ji Huh

My name is Sung-Ji Huh. And I’m an artist in South Korea.

I usually use 3d drawing graphic and mixed materials to express a sense of space and a different texture. I seek to create a concrete, vivid feeling of light for space and shape with a variety of colors. I believe that there may be a prejudice that the collection of simple two-dimensional lines called planes has a relatively limited ability to deliver senses properly. However, if anything, after you perceive these sharp lights and full of spatial sense expressed in such a simple surface, it can cause you a disorder called gestalt collapse which means when you overly immerse into certain part of the paint or any other objects, you suddenly forget the definition of the object you were concentrating, and even feel the sense of heterogeneity. which naturally makes you contemplate for a short time. And I believe whatever prejudice each person has can be harmonized with the new sense of this phenomenon. When making a work as an artist or appreciating a work as a viewer, they all can freely distorts the light, and twist these clear shapes, and even misinterpret the contents. We can enjoy the breakdown of the individual gestalt and creating a new one by harmonizing it with the old feeling we already have. My understanding of art is that art is not limited to humans but is the realm of all nature which is beyond the figurative or non-figurative form.

After all, it is a dialogue between reason and instinct. I thought it was reason, but at some point, when instinct wakes up and I am confused, reason and instinct talk to find the reason, and when the answer is found, I draw that moment. If mathematics is the basic language for logic, I think art is the basic language for creativity. You don't have to hang yourself by forcefully dragging out outdated standards that once made your heart pound in order to see or feel something. I think the same goes for painting.

Beyond the boundary between figurative and non-figurative, they is only secondary information and the essence of sensation is novelty. So, as if everything was new, no matter where you went and what you experienced as a child, I hope the paintings I pursue can be a medium that gives joy to discover what you know from what you think you don't know, and what you don't know from what you think you know.
